What if my child plays other sports?
We understand that in the younger age brackets especially, your player may not be ready to exclusively commit to soccer. With that in mind, families and coaches have successfully juggled sports in the past.
Are we going to be traveling all over Northern California?
Not for league games. The majority are in the greater Sacramento area. You may have one or two regular season games where you have to drive over an hour. In 2009 the U10G Legacy had one game in Chico. As for tournaments, the coach can register for events that are suitable to the team. Some teams only participate in tournaments that are close to Sacramento.
I heard that Select teams practice out of the area ?
SSA Select teams are assigned fields in Land Park or Greenhaven. All Select teams conduct practices in the Land Park/Greenhaven area.
When is the Select season? Is it year round?
The Select season is the same as the Rec soccer season, 10 games in the fall. In addition to the regular 10 games, Select teams play in at least 3 tournaments. Practice usually starts in June/July and lasts through the season (wrapping up in late November/early December). Tournaments are in the summer and fall, with the last being in early December.
How much does it cost?
Select registration is only slightly more expensive than Rec registration, $120 compared to $80. In addition to registration fees, players purchase their own uniforms (usually a little over $100) and have to pay tournament fees. Teams can do fundraiser's to keep the costs down. Though it varies, it usually costs around $400 or so for the ENTIRE season. This is much cheaper than Comp Soccer. There is no monthly fee.
If my child is not the best player on the team, will he/she get to play?
All Select players are required to play at least half of every game. The Select league is about player development. Players only develop by playing in every game. The 50% playing time does not apply to tournaments unless stated in the tournament rules.
Is Select the same as Comp soccer (like Sac United)?
No. Select soccer is in between Rec and Comp soccer. It is more competitive than Rec, but is not as competitive as Comp soccer or have as many games and practices.
Can my whole Rec team play Select?
Rec teams can move up to Select as a team. In addition, SSA is trying to put together Select teams through a tryout process to allow kids whose teams are not moving up a chance to play Select.
